As the Posture Experts in Malta, we stand by the American Posture Institute recommendation of Annual Posture Checks from the age of 6 years old, as a part of public health. Campaign focused on promoting healthy function. Poor posture can have far reaching effects beyond musculoskeletal health, impacting cognitive function, attention, and motor skills.

Proper Posture

Checklist for Kids

Keep the head aligned with the spine, avoiding excessive forward tilting or drooping. Avoid Tech Neck posture by holding electronic devices at eye level or using ergonomics setups.

Keep the shoulders relaxed and pulled back, avoiding rounding or hunching forward. Ensure that backpacks are worn with both straps and positioned evenly on both shoulders.

Maintain a straight and aligned spine while sitting and standing. Avoid slouching or arching the back excessively.

Keep the elbows relaxed and close to the body. Ensure that the elbows at approximately 90 degrees using a desk or table.

Keep knees at a slightly bent position, avoid locking/hyperextension. Stand with feet hip-width apart, distributing weight evenly between both feet.

The Impact of Poor Posture

on Neurodevelopment in Children

Posture plays a crucial role in the overall development of children, including their neurodevelopment. Poor posture can negatively affect the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. There is a correlation between poor posture and neurodevelopmental issues in children.

Causes of Poor Posture

Several factors contribute to poor posture in children. Sedentary lifestyles, excessive screen time, improper ergonomic setups, carrying heavy backpacks, and lack of physical activity are some common causes. Prolonged sitting in positions that strain the spine, such as slouching or hunching over electronic devices, can gradually lead to postural imbalances and muscular weaknesses.

Impact of Tech Neck Posture

Tech Neck posture refers to the forward head position adopted while using electronic devices, with the head jutting forward and the shoulders rounded. This posture has become increasingly prevalent in children due to the widespread use of smartphones, tablets, and computers. Tech Neck can cause strain on the neck, shoulders, and upper back, leading to muscular imbalances, decreased flexibility, and potential spinal misalignments. Moreover, this posture can negatively impact neurodevelopment, as it can impede proper blood circulation and nerve function in the neck and head area, potentially affecting cognitive function and concentration.

Postural Instability & ADHD

There is evidence suggesting a correlation between abnormal posture, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and abnormal neurodevelopment in children. Abnormal posture, such as poor postural control or postural imbalances, can lead to sensory and motor dysfunctions that may contribute to attention difficulties and hyperactivity seen in ADHD.

Sports Performance is highly dependent on signals being sent & received by the brain. Interference in the neurological signals result in Human Error which is detrimental to the success of an athlete or a team!

Postural correction exercises, ergonomics adjustments, and promoting awareness of proper posture habits on and off designated training time can help optimize health & performance outcomes in adults.

Our Postural system is integrated in the Ponto-Medullary Redicular Formation (PMRF) where the brain integrates information from our visual field, vestibular system and proprioception from our body to reflexogenically control our stabilization, strength & reaction time.

Digital Posture Analysis (DPA) is an objective assessment that scientifically identifies Postural Distortion Patterns (PDP’S) which contribute to dysfunctional movements of the spine and extremities. Our spine is responsible for stabilizing & supporting the Central Nervous System and to relay messages between the brain and the body. Full range of motion (ROM) improves flexibility, strength and reflex integration when performing both voluntary & involuntary movements.

Understand Findings: Discuss the results with a specialist to identify any deviations from optimal posture, such as misalignments, muscle imbalances, or areas of tension. Booking a consultation with a chiropractor is always a good option.

Consider seeing a chiropractor, who can provide manual adjustments, soft tissue work, or specific therapies to address postural issues.
